In November 2020, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) under the U.S. Department of Labor released statistics on employer-reported workplace injuries and illnesses in 2019.
BLS Report Highlights:
- The private sector reported 888,220 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses resulting in days away from work.
- Manufacturing accounted for 15% of all private industry nonfatal injuries and illnesses in 2019.
- The following 10 occupations accounted for 33.2% of all private industry cases:
- Nursing assistants
- Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers
- Laborers and freight, stock and material movers
- Light truck drivers
- Construction laborers
- Maintenance and repair workers
- Stockers and order fillers
- Janitors and cleaners, except maids and housekeeping cleaners
- Registered nurses
- Retail salespersons

- $85,000 for an employee in a worker’s compensation case. The employee hyperextended his knee when climbing down a ladder resulting in partial loss of use of his lower extremity. The judge deemed the employee was entitled to compensation for 29% permanent partial disability to his lower extremity.
- $75,000 and continuing benefits for an executive chef in a worker’s compensation case. The executive chef injured his lower back after lifting a heavy object. After two appeals, the court issued an order granting worker’s compensation benefits.
