The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that the U.S. saw an estimated 20,160 traffic-related deaths in the first six months of 2021 – 18.4% more than the number of road deaths recorded in the first six months of 2020. This is largest percentage increase in traffic-related deaths since the Department of Transportation began recording this data in 1975.
Experts say that this increase is tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, which left many Americans looking for ways to get out of the house without interacting with others. Specifically, these road deaths are the result of reckless driving on less-congested roads, failure to wear a seat belt, driving while impaired, or distracted driving.
