Types of Car Accidents in Prince George’s County

Car accidents are the most commonly occurring personal injury accident, and more than five hundred people lost their lives to car accidents in Maryland in 2019.  While most car accidents are not fatal, they can still produce lifelong injuries and chronic pain.

Several types of car accidents happen each year on Maryland’s roadways.  The most common of these include the following:

  • Head-on collisions.  Head-on collisions can occur when two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide head-on.  However, a single driver can hit an animal or fixed object in a head-on collision.  These accidents regularly happen at high speeds and are fatal;
  • Side-impact collisions.  Side-impact collisions are also known as T-bone collisions and take place when one vehicle drives into the side of another.  The impact results in a “T” shape.  These accidents are hazardous to passengers or drivers on the side of impact;
  • Rear-end collisions.  These are the most common type of car accidents.  Rear-end collisions occur when a driver runs into the back of the car ahead of them;
  • Single-car collisions.  Single-car collisions happen when only one vehicle incurs damages without the involvement of another vehicle;
  • Vehicle rollovers.  A vehicle rollover is when a car flips over onto its side or roof.  This may happen due to force from an object or driver error. Vehicles with a high center of gravity, like SUVs, are prone to rollovers;
  • Multi-vehicle collisions.  A multi-vehicle collision, or pile-up, is a crash involving three or more vehicles.  These generally occur on busy highways and freeways and may be difficult for other cars to avoid; and
  • Sideswipe collisions.  Side-swipe collisions happen when two cars come into contact while parallel to one another.  These are usually less dangerous than other types of car accidents.

Causes of Car Accidents

There are many causes of car accidents.  The most common cause of car accidents across the United States is distracted driving.  Distracted driving is any activity that takes a driver’s hands, eyes, or minds off of the activity of driving.

Other causes of car accidents include the following types of negligence:

  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol;
  • Speeding;
  • Drowsy driving;
  • Aggressive driving;
  • Failure to follow traffic signals; and
  • Unsafe lane changes.

In cases where the potentially liable party is not a negligent or distracted driver, the liable party could include:

  • Vehicle manufacturers;
  • Bars and restaurants that over-serve patrons;
  • Mechanics;
  • Construction companies; and
  • Civil authorities responsible for road safety and maintenance.

Car Accident Injuries

Regardless of the cause of a car accident, the resulting injuries vary in severity from minor cuts and bruises to lifelong conditions requiring ongoing care.  Some of the more severe car accident injuries include:

  • Traumatic brain injury;
  • Back, neck, or spinal cord injury, including paralysis;
  • Second and third-degree burns;
  • Broken bones;
  • Limb amputation;
  • Internal bleeding;
  • Organ damage;
  • Disfigurement; and
  • Wrongful death.

Car Accident Compensation

Car accident compensation depends on the extent of the victim’s injuries and their long-term prospects for recovery.  Some types of compensation pursued in a car accident claim include:

  • Payment for medical bills, follow-up doctor appointments, rehabilitation expenses, and medications;
  • Estimated costs for future medical treatments;
  • Compensation for lost wages;
  • Compensation for reduced earning capacity;
  • Payment for property damages, including for repair, total loss, loss of use, and diminished value; and
  • Compensation for physical, mental, and emotional pain and suffering.

In cases involving extreme misconduct, a car accident victim may also be awarded punitive damages as a means of punishing the at-fault party and deterring future negligent conduct.
